Guizhou is defined by its mountains. Around 92.5% of the province is made up of mountainous and hilly terrain, shaping not only the landscape, but also the way people live. Over generations, communities here learned how to work with the mountains rather than against them.

The Miao people, whose migration into Guizhou took place gradually over centuries, are believed to have arrived partly as a result of warfare and displacement from China’s central plains. Settling into Guizhou’s rugged terrain, they built homes along mountainsides and learned to make the most of limited farmland. Scarcity encouraged ingenuity, and through the need to preserve seasonal ingredients and make food last, fermentation slowly became part of everyday life.

Today, although many younger people have left for larger cities for education and work, older generations continue to carry traditions tied closely to the mountains. For many, the landscape is more than scenery, it remains part of identity, memory, and daily living.
