Ally Jiang: In My Comfort Zone, I Aspire to Excel at One Small Thing
If you’re not familiar with the influencer economy in China, here’s a quick crash course: 小众 (niche or under the radar) has become a key phrase on Chinese social media, especially on Xiaohongshu (Red Note). When a restaurant or bakery is still relatively under the radar, people are drawn to it because it feels like they are on a “treasure hunt" to find hidden gems. It taps directly into a kind of curiosity that drives a lot of modern online behavior in China.

Influencers have figured this out. That sense of curiosity is what brings traffic and engagement, especially in an environment where people are constantly fed new and fast-moving information. When it comes to food, this has turned into a strong culture of discovery. People are obsessed with finding places that feel unknown, and being able to say they were the first and that they gave it their stamp of approval before it became popular.
As a new shop owner, Ally is very aware of how this dynamic could shape her bakery. Even though Chengdu is not the capital of 出片 (photogenic on social media) - that title belongs to Shanghai - it has always been a major destination for both tourism and food. When you visit Chengdu, you get the sense that people here feel a kind of responsibility to eat well and recommend what they find. At the same time, they hold on to a more relaxed pace and stay true to their own identity and comfort. The contrast between Chengdu and Shanghai is night and day in this regard.

“My very first and most important inspiration comes from the famous croissant shop Lune Croissanterie in Australia. Their style and aesthetics hit me like no other place. They are focused on laminated pastry, and they go very deep into it to really excel. That’s something I want to do as well.”
